Secondhand fabrics, foam, stuffing, trim, cording, zippers, thread.
Created as part of The Weight, supported in part by the Vermont Arts Council, the National Endowment for the Arts, and the Vermont Community Foundation.
In Cushions, a collection of breasts of varying sizes and shapes are described in upholstery, using familiar design elements such as piping, quilting, trim, and fabric-covered buttons. Breasts are often the subject of comparison—to the breasts of others, to fruits, to pillows, to jugs, to udders. They are undeniably both decorative and functional, like cushions, and unending in their variety. With humor, repetition, and variation, Shafer’s Cushions explore the way domestic bodies are identified, objectified, supported, underestimated, and put into service.
